Country Minute: More people trading in city life for countryside serenity

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans grew used to the fast-paced hustle and bustle of the city lifestyle, but a trend that has been reported, and that we’re seeing first-hand at GreenStone, is that more and more people are trading in skyscrapers and subways for barnyards and backroads. According to a report, between July 2020 and July 2021, more than 1.2 million people left the nation’s largest urban counties.

Why is this happening?

Remote and Hybrid Work

There are a few explanations for this urban exodus, but the biggest rationale is the increase in remote and hybrid work options from employers – a lifestyle that has become increasingly popular since the beginning of the pandemic. More people are moving further from their office and choosing more acreage and a quieter lifestyle – especially when they don’t have to make the commute to their workplace as often.

Additionally, working remotely more means spending more time at home than ever before. For many, that extra time leads to the want for more space, and newer and nicer home features. Country homes often offer much more room and space compared to city condos and apartments.

As more people look for their piece of the countryside, the supply of homes decreases, and at GreenStone, we’re seeing many people remedying that issue by building their own home. This allows those searching for their new spacious homestead to pick the perfect piece of land and the features they want in their new space – scratching that itch we mentioned above for “newer and nicer features.”

Community and Quality of Life

For many, finding a sense of community and camaraderie among neighbors is important – especially when raising children and building a family. Oftentimes, finding a sense of strong community is much easier in the country – making this option more appealing.

And as important as community is, the need for space is also important. Living in a city apartment or condo may make you feel right “on top” of your neighbors. The country allows more space and privacy, cutting out cooped-up-frustrations with those around you keeping those neighborly relationships stronger.

Spending more time at home means spending more time listening to whatever is outside your window, and many people now prefer the sound of humming birds over the humming of cars on city streets. Living in the country means easier access to nature and a serene quietness, helping those working from home focused and feel more relaxed.
